FAIRS & MARKETS OF MEDIEVAL ENGLAND

In July, Wirksworth celebrated 700 years of its market charter. The festivities started with a WEA lecture on 'Fairs and Markets of Medieval England', with particular reference to Wirksworth.

It was arranged by WEA Wirksworth in association with Wirksworth Civic Society and Historical Society. A report follows.

Dr David Marcombe, the Director of the Centre for Local History at the University of Nottingham, delivered the lecture to a sell-out audience in the Town Hall.

It was a very enjoyable evening with an excellent lecture, lots of questions from members of the audience and the opportunity to look at a replica of the market charter and other artefacts which David had brought with him.

There is an illustrated booklet of the lecture "Medieval Fairs and Markets and the Wirksworth Charter" which can be obtained from Wirksworth Library or Heritage Centre price £3.50.

For more information or to get a copy (including by post £3.87p) phone Christie Taylor 01629 826796 or Ursula Gratton 01629 822519.
