Lives of the artists: Vasari & the Italian Renaissance

Home

The career of Giorgio Vasari (1511-74) as an artist has long been overshadowed by his groundbreaking book Lives of the Artists, first published in 1550. Anecdotal, occasionally inaccurate or partisan, his work nevertheless is crucial to our knowledge of the Renaissance and effectively marks the start of art criticism. We will look at the Renaissance through the eyes of Vasari and consider how much he has influenced subsequent ideas of art. It would be helpful if students had access to an edition of Lives of the Artists.

In a second course, from January, we will study the art and culture of Venice.
