YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED Q: How do I join a class? A: You can enrol with the Secretary, above. If you want to see if a course is right for you, come along to the first meeting without obligation. But get in touch first to check there are still places!
Q: What if I don't know much about the subject? A: You don't need any previous knowledge or qualifications to join most of our courses, only a willingness to share with others your ideas and experience.
Q: What is the WEA? A: The Workers' Educational Association (WEA) is Britain's major voluntary adult education organisation. It provides quality learning for adults from all walks of life. Students help decide what courses should be offered.
Q: Am I a concession? A: There are two levels of concessions, called 'A' and 'B'. In summary, Concession A is for disabled people and carers (and in discretionary cases, other people experiencing hardship). Concession B (free classes) applies to people on some other benefits, their dependants, and under 18s. You can also claim a discount if you attend more than one class at a time.

Classes for 2008 - 2009 Poetry writing This course will inspire, encourage and support learners' poetry writing. Practical exercises and advice, plenty of discussion and feedback on work and a close look at poems by contemporary poets. Writers of all levels of experience are welcome. The Derwent Valley: where innovation changed the world The Concerto The course will trace the development of this popular musical form from early types, through the Baroque concerto grosso to the dominance of the solo concerto from Mozart onwards. A study of concertos from the 17th to the 20th centuries. All welcome. 15 meetings Weds 10.30-noon. Starts 1 Oct, Wirksworth Library. Fee £61.90 (concessions A £55.70, B free) Art of the Low Countries City, village and countryside: from the embryonic landscape painting of illuminated manuscripts to the dazzling brushwork of Rembrandt, this course will look at why for three centuries one small corner of Europe came to be one of the dominant schools in European painting. Pre-enrolment necessary for this course as numbers are limited. Pictures on a page: a history of the art of illustration Compared to painters and sculptors, illustrators have tended to remain unsung artisans. The course will show how the art of the illustrator has blossomed from its origins in medieval illumination to enrich our lives from childhood. Join us to learn about great illustrators of the past and present and rediscover childhood books. Bring your own favourite illustrated books to the first meeting and throughout the course. Artists may include Arthur Rackham, Herge, Kate Greenaway. Pre-enrolment necessary for this course as numbers are limited. Literature: conflict The themes of conflict throughout the 20th century and its human consequences will be the focus of this literature course. We will study a range of novels including All Quiet on the Western Front, A Farewell to Arms, The Quiet American and Lord of the Flies. We will also look at some poetry, including some of the work of the Great War poets, reportage and propaganda. We'll consider the aims and differing approaches of the writers and the reasons why they continue to be attracted to write about conflict. 20 meetings Friday 10.15-noon. Starts 26 Sept, Wirksworth Town Hall.
